From April 24th -27th 2025, Uganda will host the highly anticipated Cities Expo & Symposium, an annual flagship event of the Cities Consortium in Mbarara City. This event will convene urban stakeholders, policymakers, investors, civil society representatives, and international partners in a focused dialogue and exchange aimed at addressing urban challenges, fostering collaboration, and showcasing investment opportunities. It offers a unique platform to advance the development of Uganda’s cities while building bridges with global urban networks.
Cities are hubs of innovation, economic activity, and cultural diversity. However, rapid urbanization has brought forth challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, rising inequality, and environmental degradation. The Cities Expo & Symposium recognizes these complexities and seeks to present actionable solutions. The event aligns with Uganda’s vision for planned, inclusive, and resilient cities, contributing directly to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.
A dedicated expo segment will provide a platform for local governments and private entities to showcase projects requiring investment. Areas include green infrastructure, waste management, affordable housing, renewable energy, and technology-driven solutions. International investors will have an opportunity to explore high-potential ventures that align with both financial goals and social impact.
Alongside formal sessions, cultural events will celebrate the rich heritage of Uganda’s cities. Networking opportunities will foster collaboration among local, regional, and international participants.
The event prioritizes inclusivity, emphasizing the critical role of city inhabitants, especially youth, women, refugees, and marginalized groups, in shaping the future of cities. Special forums and discussions will explore how these groups can actively participate in urban development and governance.
Cutting-edge technologies and initiatives, such as smart city applications, sustainable transportation models, and climate-resilient urban design, will be demonstrated. These innovations aim to inspire actionable projects tailored to Uganda’s urban realities.
The symposium will feature keynote speeches, panel discussions, and interactive workshops led by experts in urban planning, governance, and sustainable development. Attendees will gain insights into best practices from Uganda and beyond, with a focus on practical implementation
Environmental sustainability will be a cornerstone of the event. Highlights include discussions on urban green spaces, climate change adaptation, renewable energy solutions, and effective urban waste management systems. These sessions will provide participants with actionable strategies to mitigate environmental challenges while fostering economic and social development.
